Joining a regional network for technology businesses
We have joined a regional network of small and mid-sized technology businesses based around Manchester. It is a low-key group — no grand mission statement, just a few dozen firms who meet to compare notes on the unglamorous realities of running a company in this field.
Why we joined
Running a studio like ours involves a lot of decisions that have nothing to do with code: how to hire well, how to structure support contracts fairly, how to grow without losing what makes the place work. These are exactly the things that are hard to learn from books and easy to get wrong in isolation. A room full of people facing the same questions, willing to be honest about what has and has not worked for them, is genuinely useful.
We have spent years being fairly heads-down, focused on our own clients and our own craft. That focus has served us well, but it can also make you insular. Joining the network is a small, deliberate step toward being part of a wider conversation, and toward giving back some of what we have learned along the way.
What we hope to contribute
We do not have all the answers, but we have opinions earned the hard way on a few topics: keeping teams small and senior, modernising old systems without rewrites, and running software affordably over the long term. If those experiences are useful to another founder wrestling with the same problems, we are glad to share them. And we expect to learn at least as much as we offer.
